Mount Ophir Estate's Weekender Guide to Rutherglen

WELCOME

Located on 50 hectares of secluded farmland in Victoria’s fabled Rutherglen region, Mount Ophir Estate is the perfect place to unwind, reconnect with nature, and indulge your senses.

FRIDAY NIGHT

Check into your dreamy accommodation at Mount Ophir, our historical country Estate (est 1891) set on 56 hectares of picturesque farm and vineyard.

Once you've arrived, take a walking tour around the property (especially striking during 'golden hour'), including around the unique heritage-listed winery on the hill, which in 1903 was a state-of-the-art wine-producing facility. Also, spot the striking French provincial tower built by Prominent London wine merchants, the Burgoyne family.

BOOK ACCOMMODATION

SATURDAY

Make the most of those luxury linens with a sleep-in and start your morning slow with a light breakfast "at home". When staying with us at Mount Ophir Estate, breakfast is included upon arrival and features a fresh loaf of local sourdough, butter, spreads, muesli, milk, tea and coffee.

11am

Get back to nature on the Murray River Trail

Whether you walk or cycle this trail, this trail will take you through beautiful old river gums, local vineyards as well as historical spots. Walking will take you approximately one and a half hours. The trail will wind through beautiful old gum trees and eventually bring you to the Murray River.

1pm

St Leonards Vineyard

St Leonards Vineyard is our favourite hideaway for wine and food lovers, located on a picturesque bend of the Murray River; just what you'll be wanting after escaping the city. The Cellar Door is open each Saturday and Sunday and offers a modern and fresh range of award-winning wines, and as part of a food pairing experience too. Are you visiting on the first Saturday of the month? Relax and enjoy live music, Rutherglen's popular live music event. Bookings for lunch are recommended.

BOOK LUNCH

6pm

Dinner at Thousand Pound Wine Bar

Located in the main street of Rutherglen, Thousand Pound tosses out stuffy pretences, blurring the boundaries between city and country; this is a place where local winemakers drink. The food here is friendly and for sharing, and the speciality steak grilled over charcoal is our top pick. They also feature more than 100 local wines on their wine list, so it's a perfect place to 'sip' the region.

BOOK DINNER

SUNDAY

Morning walk Chiltern Mount Pilot National park

You better balance out all this wine and food with some outdoor activity, and just a short drive from Rutherglen, is the Chiltern-Mt Pilot National Park. Pick from short walks to day-long treks, and your eyes will be in for a treat! The summit walk to Mt Pilot is our favourite for spectacular views and wildflowers. Look out for greenhood orchids, chocolate lilies, bush peas or the vibrant golden wattle, to name a few.

Noon

All Saints Estate Cellar Door

It's time for some wine education (and tasting!); you've earned it! A trip to Rutherglen would not be complete without a visit to the All Saints Estate (also our sister property). Here, enjoy the beautifully manicured gardens, the iconic castle, plus several barrel halls lined with giant sleeping fortified.

BOOK TASTING
